Adopt or Shop? Where Should You Get Your Dog or Puppy? – BTR Pulse [Ep21]

Adopt or Shop? Where Should You Get Your Dog or Puppy? – BTR Pulse [Ep21]

The streets of New York are full of restaurants, bars, skyscrapers and..dogs! Anyone who’s lived or visited New York would know this is a city full of canines and the people who love them. But where did all these dogs come from? This week on Pulse our host and card-carrying dog owner Jess Westberg examines the paradox: while shelters are full of unwanted animals, there’s also an extremely high demand for pure-bred dogs in boutique pet stores. To get a handle on the issue, Westberg talks to pet-store owners, a full-time Animal Rescuer and an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) spokesperson. Should you adopt a dog or buy one? Watch and decide for yourself.

Featured songs: “The World is Going up in Flames” by Charles Bradley and “The Traitor” by The Menahan Street Band. All images from Jess Westberg or Wikimedia Commons.

The city’s heartbeat is out there, pumping the Who, What, When, Where and Why that drive the most interesting, newsworthy and often controversial topics we tackle each week on Pulse. We take to the street and give ordinary people a chance to sound off and be heard. From politics and health to privacy and communication, we’ve got our finger on the Pulse. Wednesdays on the new BreakThru Radio.

Get on YouTube and watch Oprah Winfrey’s shows about puppy mills. They adopt from an animal shelter, or a rescue group. Websites such as Petfinder are good too. I know it is tempting, if you walk into a pet store and see a cute puppy. You don’t know if it will turn out to be a sick puppy, maybe with Parvo. Also, if you feel sorry for it, it doesn’t help to buy it, because you will only be supporting the horrible practice of puppy mills.

If we adopt, it should be for free. It’s like people paying to adopt a child. I really really want to adopt a dog!!

I believe in buying from a responsible breeder or even a pet store…most rescue and shelter dogs are either seized or surrendered to the shelter for free…..their medical care is donated by veterinarians….food is donated by corporations and individuals and the dogs are cared for by volunteers. Tax money is given through your county state and federal government. You till out endless applications and home inspections. And PAY for the puppy. A responsible breeder breeds for better health and temperament thus assuring g a longer happier life for your puppy. Most breeders are there to ask questions and for help even after your purchase.and if this is about puppy mills….the pet store and the shelter both sell puppy mill puppies. Buy from a responsible breeder.

Oh yes, people are looking for something specific in a dog and that’s why they want to buy from a pet store.  Goes to show you how shallow humans are, when they buy a dog because it designerish.

    cute puppies

  19. James Ly on October 29, 2019 at 3:14 am

Adopting is better.. Do you guys know what euthanize is? Buying one causes euthanize. Besides, there’s plenty of puppies at shelter. Most puppies from store comes from puppy mill. Also, it’s more expansive buying from a stores. Buying from a shelter is cheaper.

  25. Diego H on October 29, 2019 at 3:26 am

Funny how puppy store operators are so ugly…

  26. CynDA01 on October 29, 2019 at 3:27 am

its easier said then done. ive tried many times to adopt a pet from the sheltor and the ladies were so rude to me. had such attitude and really didnt give me a chance to adopt a dog, of any age. they would rather adopt to a whole family then to me and my mom 🙁 but i still decided jst to wait it out instead of running to the pet store. its not the dogs fault those ladies r mean

  27. M on October 29, 2019 at 3:28 am

    well said!

  28. Beatlefan333 on October 29, 2019 at 3:28 am

The pet store says that the dogs they are selling are coming in from the dog shelter. Is this true or are they lying?

  29. sierra marie on October 29, 2019 at 3:29 am

Why puy a puppy, over $1000, when you can adopt a puppy, for free !?

  32. Mike A. on October 29, 2019 at 3:29 am

I mean every dog’s gonna need a home irrespective if they’re from a puppy mill or not. I’m looking into getting a dog, and I’m considering rescue, but there aren’t that many options and I don’t know wtf I’m getting. Was this dog abused? I took an abused cat, and she was well socialized and less skittish before she passed with my fiance and i giving her love, but she also wasn’t a 40+ pound dog that could bite my f*ckin’ fingers off.

  34. scarlett foster on October 29, 2019 at 3:30 am

What was wrong with the pugs?!?

  35. jen conor on October 29, 2019 at 3:31 am

anyone who wants a dog/cat should go to their local shelter and save a life!! Millions of animals die each year, because of over breeding!! why should animals pay with their lives cause of ignorant humans!! so be smart and adopt!!!

  36. mj belanger on October 29, 2019 at 3:31 am

I find that shelters hide things as well as stores for example some kittens were written as younger than they were on purpose so that they had a better chance of adoption also some were written older so that theybcould get fixed and after awhile the same kitten depending on if it didnt grow to big would have its age changed

  37. Honkapunk !! on October 29, 2019 at 3:33 am

I got my dog from a breeder face to face and it’s greater than buying a dog from a store because I know how the owner is.

  38. Kiana Seda on October 29, 2019 at 3:33 am

the only thing with adoption centers is that most of the dogs there are old, people want really young puppies .

  39. Sweet0Devil on October 29, 2019 at 3:35 am

Sometimes I really want to move to the US just to save all those sweet pitbull(mixes) and other dogs. (I’m really glad though that my country only has no-kill shelters)

  40. Randy Notfullname on October 29, 2019 at 3:36 am

Great Video! Before you decide to buy a puppy from a puppy store, do your research! If you don’t know what a puppy mill is, please find out! They are horrible places. In just about every case, puppy stores get their dogs from puppy mills. They will invariably lie to you, and say that they got their puppies from reputable breeders, or as this guy said, USDA breeders. All I can say about this is BULL! The USDA does not have the resources or time to police these stores.

this is stupid pure bred or not its going to love you and be your companion so many dogs are being put down because of the stupid need to have a pure bred most people whant pure breds so they can breed them and sell the pups i own a mixed dog and she is the love of my life she is so sweet and loving she was a rescue and almost every time i go to the park or any thing like that most people dont even know shes a mixed breed it dumb !!!!!

  42. mijumaru97 on October 29, 2019 at 3:39 am
