Emotional support animals: has America's 'epidemic' gone too far?

Emotional support animals: has America's 'epidemic' gone too far?

Emotional support animals, or ESAs, have exploded across the US in recent years, with rising numbers of pet owners getting their animals certified online.

Unlike in the UK, ESAs have legal status in the US on a tier below traditional service animals, but the backlash has begun – with critics complaining the system is being abused by regular pet owners who want to take their animals into unsuitable public spaces. The Guardian’s Richard Sprenger – animal lover but pet sceptic – meets ESA owners and their animals across North America.

The people with these emotional support animals all have one thing in common. They’re all Caucasian. A testament as to how easy their lives have been. They should have all been thrown from a mountain top or left in the forest to die from exposure as infants.

"Emotional Support Animals" – for when you’re such a wreck, you can’t vibe with your own species

  8. Kwingle on August 10, 2022 at 6:46 am

Jeez. I get cats, dogs, heck even domestic foxes, ducks, and ponies! But.. wild animals? That’s where I draw the line. If you’re so unstable that you think you need an.. alligator?! A peacock?! Maybe that says something. Just.. just don’t.

  9. Stu B on August 10, 2022 at 6:47 am

They give this stuff away here in austin tx. You can take animals anywhere …health risk?

  10. Toast on August 10, 2022 at 6:48 am

Dopamine is a naturally occurring chemical in our bodies, though when it becomes scarce it leads to mental health issues. Periods of grief, regret, guilt, and pain can make it harder for the brain to release the chemical. Clinical ailments also cause this inability. Medication can help, but social creatures are the most beneficial. People with anxiety disorders, especially with social anxiety, find it hard to talk to or confide in others, making pets an easier way to be happier.

let’s be honest a lot of pet owners are not ok in the head. ironic…

  12. Cerys Falmai on August 10, 2022 at 6:52 am

Does Wally only get fed two chicks every three months? An alligator of his size is supposed to be fed once or twice a WEEK. Please tell me his owner isn’t intentionally underfeeding him so he’ll become stunted and always remain a manageable size.

  13. Viktor on August 10, 2022 at 6:52 am

Less family, more emotional crutches, that is what these animals are. They aren’t helping they are helping these weak people deflect reality.

  14. Mike C. on August 10, 2022 at 6:54 am

1st guy talks about how much he love his alligator, proceeds to show the same animal he loves SOOOOOO! dearly lying inches away from a bottle of anti-freeze

Typical guardian – doesn’t actually challenge anyone he speaks to properly.
It puts service animals at increased risk as untrained ESA’s get allowed in areas like flights with proper service dogs.

It’s essentially a middle class (largely female) way of avoiding having to build any form of mental resilience. On campuses at least.

The man with the alligator is a very strong man for changing his life like that. Someone who can change their whole life that way is incredible

  20. Kevin Bogert on August 10, 2022 at 7:08 am

It should be banned it just excuse to take your pet where ever you go. I have bad anxiety i dont need a animal. These people like faking anixiety if it that bad go see a theorpist or check yourself in to a mental hospital.

The whole concept of emotional support animals is a joke. These people just need proper therapy not using a peacock or hamster as crutch.

My brother and his wife at the time exploited the E.S.A. exception so they could keep their cat at an apartment building. Otherwise, they probably would have had to live out of their car or rent a more expensive apartment or something.

As someone who personally trained Golden retrievers for this purpose through the E.C.A.D program (look it up if you don’t know) these people are not disabled, they are just SERIOUSLY mentally tweaked

    Emotional support animal = pet.

  35. Chia_Pet on August 10, 2022 at 7:21 am

This guy deserves nothing and needs to suffer for his stupidity. The guy he paralyzed will suffer for the rest of his life, so why does he get a pass for causing so much suffering to others? He thought it was cool to be a bully and now someone is paralyzed for life, the only life this guy will get, just because this guy thought it was cool. People need to stop pandering to these scumbags and then the glory of being a bully wouldn’t be so cool if they were forced to pay for their actions.
Edit: This guy learned nothing. He said he was all about himself when he paralyzed the guy and treated others badly. He refused medication because he didn’t like it, so he forces a dangerous animal onto others because he likes it. He is still all about himself and has an obvious requirement to be the big guy and center of attention. Funny how he tries to make people feel bad by crying, but then is all happy and laughing being the center of attention with a dangerous animal.

This lady moved into our condos with a very aggressive German Shepherd who tries to bite other residents and it seems as if nothing can be done about it because this dog is her Emotional Support Animal. I think ESAs is a big joke. I think too many people pretend to have disabilities just to be allowed to have pets.
