Welcome to a new series on my channel. In this series I will be training a German Shepherd Dog named Harley to be a service dog.
In episode one I will be teaching Harley the first ten steps that I follow when training a service dog. These steps do not include socializing or confidence building. These steps are for obedience, as it’s important for a service dog to always be obedient.

Nate, thanks so much for such a great video series. Just got my 8 week old GSD hoping to train him as an ESA. I don’t know much about training dogs but this was by far the best thing I’ve found. I’ve felt frustrated feeling like I don’t know what I’m doing. Great explanations & demonstrations. I’m going to start trying your methods tomorrow and I feel more confident that I can follow this. Do you have any videos (I’ve gotta sort through your playlist still) on training an ESA for PTSD?
i have mobility issues and am supposed to go to university on my own soon i have started using a wheelchair recently to be more independent as I used to rely on other people a hundred percent of the time i had trouble. however i need to be function without a member of my family present constantly and live alone. the wheelchair has helped a lot but there are things i still can’t do as there are times i can’t even lift my arms. I’m wondering if i should train a dog myself as there just aren’t any facilities that so it for service dogs like a place you can get one in India. i will however be going to the states for my studies. would 8-10 months be enough to train a puppy to do certain tasks for it to even count as a service animal i could keep with me in university housing??? what should I do
I have a four month I am working on training as my service dog. I know all dogs are different but my last one I never had problems with her only focusing on me. This puppy is different when my boyfriend is at home she stays by his side sleeps with him, even during play time she prefers him. I have asked him to be hands off and he gets up but I am having a hard time doing this I definitely need help. Desperately need help
Where is my food first before u talkNd talk bowowowo!
I have sifted through a lot of dog trainers and techniques through my lifetime of dog ownership. Nate’s system works better than any of them! Get your steps and timing down and you will have success. I’m so thankful to Nate for his dedication and willingness to share so much content that actually works. I had a zoom private lesson with him. I highly suggest you do this because even when you think you are doing it right, there is probably an important nuance you have missed. Just one lesson rocketed me and puppy to the next level. My puppy, Monty, is four months old and now does all of these commands, (and more) in the video! I have never before had such success training a dog. Thanks Nate! (Susan Thompson)
could this work on an almost 2yo puppy?
Our blue heeler will be here in October, I am subscribed and will be using all your methods for training.
Thank you so much for this! Is it ever too late to start? Our puppy is now 9mo old and does basic commands of recall, sit, stay, release. However I want to build on this based on your video!
What are you training the dog for? What kind of service dog?
I need help, I am training a dog for my son for ADHD. I am stuck on how to train our 4 month old puppy not to have accidents when out in stores. She is house trained and we do try to get her to go before we head in but she will have a random accident that throws us for a loop and I dont know how to help her.
best video out there
I WANT TO PLAY OR GIVE ME MY TREATS BOWWWW. HIIIIH
Very good video
I just wanna say my puppy is three months old and with your videos you have help me come along way she has a registered service dog and she’s still working but she’s doing very good and I appreciate your videos would love to show you some progress
What do you use for treats?
I’m not sure if you already explained this in the video and i missed it, I was wondering what the reasoning behind not saying the commands was? Like when you taught her to sit lay down and such, howcome no "sit" or "lay down"?
Does it help with confidence before introducing words?
hi guys, why to markers? one looks like an active marker vs the static one
He is gone again bowwowoowww
This video is a good one and helpful, but when are you going to put out the next steps in training a service dog?
Hey Nate, I just got my 8 week old german shepherd puppy 5 days ago, I started using your method 2 days ago and 4 times a day I take him out for about 10 minutes. I know the video is broken up, did you spend about a week or two on each section off camera? I’m just trying to figure out how much time I should spend on each step even after my dog understands the concept before moving to the next.
Thanks!
Does the heel position depend on which hand is dominant, or is it always your left side either way?
Can I bathe my dog once a week?
Where is HURLEY ? He is gone so quick hhaaa
Bell rung and you know what means good luck
Wish I seen this video 2 yrs ago
What are your thoughts on training an older dog. (4 years) she is new to our family. We want to train her on a few things to help my son who is deaf. After listening you talk about imprinting.
Nate, I have been watching your videos and have been impressed with your style and approach to training. I have a question though, in your episode about training a dog to accept a muzzle you were using what looked like a wire basket muzzle. Is this what you would recommend for others and if so, why? I had to put down my service dog two months ago due to seizures. His genetic younger brother will be born any day now and I will train him as a service dog as well as search & rescue tracker as my other dog was. My primary care physician and I parted company over my service dog as she was scared of large dogs. A muzzle might have prevented that from happening. What about the soft silicone muzzles or leather? Your thoughts?
Can you condition an older dog to accept a harness? She won’t come to me when she sees it in my hand… I won’t go after her… I have treats in my hand. I’ve tried leading her with the treat… But I have to say she’s a smart cookie…lol
She is an over all great dog. This has just started.
Please any advice
Excellent demo and explanation – fantastic stuff to learn for my puppy to be
My dog is a couple years old now. Well behaved but not this well trained. I wonder if this will still work.
OMG!!!
I just watched this about 2hrs ago & my 4year old took to it so easy.. She has basic training. But this just amplified all of her training… Amazing!!!
Hello Nate
I just had two German Shepherds puppies, 11 weeks old.
can I use your technique to train them together or it’s better individually
Thank you so much!!
Please can you explain why you don’t use the command word as a form of conditioning ?
