HOMEMADE DOG FOOD | HEALTHY DOG FOOD RECIPE
We recently switched our 4-year old dog over from store-bought dog food to homemade dog food and Charlie could not be happier.

This is a great, well-rounded beginner recipe that is easy to make and can easily be scaled up and stored in the freezer. I really enjoy making fresh food for Charlie and hope to share more recipes soon!

Do you cook for your pets? I would love to hear from you in the comments below! Feel free to share all of your questions and tips.

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD RECIPE:
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large zucchini shredded
1 cup baby spinach finely chopped
1 cup shredded carrots
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 egg
3 cups cooked rice (I like using frozen brown rice)

Heat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add in the coconut oil and turkey and sauté until it is browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the zucchini, spinach, carrots, and turmeric. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.

Turn off the heat and crack in the egg. Let the egg cook in the hot food, mix it around to ensure it is mixed through and cooked through.

Stir in the rice until everything is well combined. Cool and serve!

NOTES
*Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Makes 6-7 cups.

*This is a vet-approved dog food recipe but please note that I am not a licensed veterinarian, and all opinions are my own. Please consult with your veterinarian before switching your dog to a homemade diet.

I have been cooking homemade food for my dog since he was 8 months old and now he is almost 5 years old. I am a chef and did all my research. I add vet prescribed hard food with his homemade food and he loves it. I don’t use coconut oil because that causes high cholesterol for dogs. His coat and muscles are strong and the food has many anti inflammatory spices and herbs for a healthy dog. He loves it and waits for it every morning and evening

Fully cooked food doesn’t kill the nutrition ?

  8. Zoomer on June 8, 2022 at 2:03 am

Why don’t dogs need salt? I thought all animals need it.

  9. slugger on June 8, 2022 at 2:04 am

This is great, I honestly think that if you’re going to feed your dog something you should be able to eat it yourself (aside from the raw meat)

How do you get around the fact that Charlie comes from the grey wolf and is a carnival and has a small intestine and goes to the bathroom within 1/2 hour. Humans have a very long track and that’s because we are made to get vegetables and it takes longer to digest the vegetables. A cow has 4 chambers because it takes a long process to digest the food. Every animal on this planet is made to eat a certain way, the natural way is the healthiest for them. The reason cows are so sick and have half their bodies in cancer when they are bushed into the butcher is because humans are feeding them corn and their bodies are not designed for it. A dog feels sick, so it will go up to grass and eat it to throw up. Mother Nature designed animals, including us, a certain way, when you interfere with that, then you get sick. Animals get sick because we feed them commercial foods, dead food. Dogs and cats are designed by Mother Nature to eat meat, that is why they have tearing teeth. Humans have blunt teeth that are for breaking down the fiber in plants. Yes, plants will make us very healthy because we were designed to eat them, but are animals were not. I have put my dogs on chicken and raw farm eggs because their intestines were made to eat that way, that is the way they would eat in Mother Natures’ world. P.S. love your show.

I’ve been a dog food chef for years However I do mix it with the best quality kibble available , since that may have brown rice or yam then mix won’t have rice, if it’s the no grain dry food then I mix in rice or oatmeal Broth is another thing I frequently make out of chicken or beef bones

  23. Ki Ki on June 8, 2022 at 2:18 am

Would love to find a way for my dog. But my dog is allergic to rice, soy, corn, dairy, green beans n mixed berries… finding dog food is tough. Plus that doesn’t have as much potato is hard…

  24. Diane Young on June 8, 2022 at 2:20 am

Am thinking of making my own however, one dog is allergic to rice so what would you recommend instead?

  25. Ritesh Saxena on June 8, 2022 at 2:22 am

    Hi Dani,
    Loads of thanks to you.
    Why?
    Because:
    1. I am a hopeless cook with no cooking interest at all.
    2. I love my 7 years old dog who till date has never eaten anything else other than Chicken, Eggs, & Rice or the readymade expensive food for dogs in the market. Also, he doesn’t like to eat anything else.
    3. I don’t like going to the kitchen but my love for my dog & your recipe made me go there.
    4. Now, I am mostly in the kitchen making this recipe.
    5. My dog loved it from the day one & leaves the bowl spotless after the meals.
    Thanks again. God bless you.

  26. Helena geerts on June 8, 2022 at 2:23 am

I have watched A LOT of fresh food/ raw food video’s on recipes for dogs
And 90% of them had raw eggs. Whilst you say dogs can’t have it
I just want to know what you say about this?

  27. Teona on June 8, 2022 at 2:24 am

I made this and my dogs love it. Turkey is unavailable in my country, so I replaced it with chicken and added some quale eggs.

Hi there! I’m just wondering if ur Vet suggested any supplements to add to the food. That’s where I get overwhelmed because I worry if they are getting all their nutrients. Love this recipe and will definitely try it on my 2 Yorkies!

  31. Cara on June 8, 2022 at 2:30 am

I have a 20lb rat terrier. Any idea how much of this to give him per day? I don’t want to over feed him.

  32. Superbling26 on June 8, 2022 at 2:31 am

This is a horrible diet for a dog. Dogs are obligate carnivores. They are unable to digest fiber. They are meant to eat Meat exclusively.

  33. Sislertx on June 8, 2022 at 2:34 am

I mix beef broth or.chicken in with kibbles…my dogs hate store dog food…i drain meat juices in with it too…if i dont they wont eat at all
I think im ready to do the deep.dive in dog gourmet…after all dog.food.wasnt invented until.after ww2…and every dog ive seen with a healthy.shiney coat ate human food.

  36. Christina Stephenson on June 8, 2022 at 2:37 am

I enjoyed your video. Could I please get some advice on my dog? I am fearing I may not be feeding him correctly. I presently make his meals.

  37. Kathryn Letchford on June 8, 2022 at 2:40 am

For a start, dogs get more nutrition from raw meat. After all, they do catch their prey in the wild and then cook it.
Second. Their diets really are a little more complex than you think.
Rice is VERY fattening for dogs.
You haven’t included any organ meats.
    Where is the calcium?

  38. apap on June 8, 2022 at 2:46 am

I have to say, you could definitely do with no rice and maybe some organ meat instead which your dog will benefit more from

  39. CeCe Wang on June 8, 2022 at 2:46 am

    why dog cannot eat kale?

  40. MBX on June 8, 2022 at 2:47 am

Kale? Wrong dogs eat kale mine does

  41. Pat Cummings on June 8, 2022 at 2:52 am

Thank you so much ! All the sites on natural dog foods for seniors include some kind of expensive supplements. I just want to give my pups something healthy with their kibble that is easy on their digestion. Thanks again.
