How Plastic Bottles Are Recycled Into Polyester

How Plastic Bottles Are Recycled Into Polyester

The rather complex process of converting used plastic bottles into useful polyester for the clothing industry. If it wasn’t for the cheap labour, is it still a profitable business?…

Even though polyester is recycled this is not environmentally friendly… As it sheds micro plastic on washing… Which is if not more then equally harmful to the environment… So better to stop using synthetic fabric products overall

this is even worse for nature, people buy these clothes and wash them out in the washing machine, so micro particles of plastic end up in our rivers and seas and ultimately in our food.

Polyester is supposedly linked with increased risk of having breast cancer.
I find it weird that polyester is used as cloth before governments have approved/disapproved it’s correlation with breast cancer and god knows what else.

It is a start for now…and then transitioning to bio plastics or none at all is the eventual solution.

  28. PrincessSakuno on January 12, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Jesus christ I can’t believe how labour + resource intensive making plastic to polyester is… not just that. The amount of plastic we create … we can’t just continue like this
what is the world coming to

  29. Hegemon59 on January 12, 2020 at 12:31 pm

So, many countries who are benefited from big brands throw accusations and point fingers at China as the major polluter in the world, but they are more than happy to buy the ready made materials processed in China so that could start making billions. Talking about hypocrites!!!

  35. tohneyteoh on January 12, 2020 at 12:35 pm

I was hoping they melt it down and reform it as new bottles. I wonder if drinks in the future can be sold from dispensers, consumers will need to have their own containers, like a paper cup or water canteen.

Polyester is now being rebranded as “performance” fabric.

I wish apparel companies would be honest and say “polyester is plastic. And we’d rather use recycled soda bottles to make clothes instead of growing cotton.”

The plastic clothes that we wear destroyed the oceans and rivers, the large pieces were never the real threat, we as a species pretty much have no real future.
