Officers Honor Last 9/11 Search Dog With Moving Tribute Before Being Put Down

Bretagne, the last known 9/11 search and rescue dog, was laid to rest. Firefighters lined up along a Houston area sidewalk to honor the canine as she took her final steps. Bretagne served our nation from trying to find survivors at the World Trade Center buildings to searching for victims during Hurricane Katrina. After Bretagne retired at 10, she became a member of a local Texas fire department. Bretagne was 16-years-old.

  1. May she find lots of tasty doggie bones, lots of green fields to run through and get endless belly rubs in doggie heaven

  2. A true hero. Today is the 18th anniversary of 9/11. The image of Bretagne hoisted above the rubble on 9/11 will forever be the most memorable and most heart breaking image following 9/11. These many rescue dogs go overlooked for the jobs they did and it’s sad.

  3. Golden retrievers typically live to 14 but in this case I think god gave this one two more years as a reward

  4. I’m a living. Sept 11 first responder and I cried my eyes out see this. I have a service dog for my medical needs and it’s hard to watch

  5. I know this story was a long time ago but for those who were wondering, she was put down because of kidney failure.
