Puppy Pen Set Up – Professional Dog Training

This video goes over how to set up a puppy pen for your puppy. In the video I talk about setting up the pen specifically for your puppies needs, for example, creating an escape-proof pen if need be. I also cover how to initially get your puppy used to being in the pen. After watching this video you can check out these videos on:

Just got a pen. Did exactly what you said not to do. Left him alone with his favorite chew thing, and he almost immediately dropped it and started whimpering for companionship. Now, of course, it’s just a jail to him. I’ve got some work to do …

Excellent! Very good tips. How do you bend and secure the flooring, please?

I have been watching a lot of puppy videos. This one has been by far the most helpful because I’m going to have to kennel my puppy and a pen until I know she’s safe around my adult dogs. When she’s out my big adult dog will need to be on lead.

Do you have a video on how to train your puppy to use the indoor toilet occasionally? I love the idea of having that option when the weather is bad or when there are fireworks outside. Thanks for your videos.

I like this concept of choices with the pen & crate

I haven’t seen anyone else cover this! Great stuff!

Great video! Question…when do you stop using the pen and just transition to the crate only or partial rein of the house. Is it when they get too big for the pen or when they are fully housebroken?

  8. Cloudburst on August 10, 2022 at 10:59 pm

Where do you buy that flooring under the pen?

Do you find any difference between using a pee pad vs a pee pad tray vs artificial turf vs patch of real grass for helping dogs discriminate between their pee area and other indoor surfaces like carpets later on?

Fabulous as always! What tips do you have for the common situation where clients don’t have time to teach their puppy to be comfortably alone in the pen? I encourage a ton of enrichment, appropriate exercise, adaptil, etc. but clients really struggle with common situations where they have to subject the pup to something they haven’t trained because the training takes a while (confinement, husbandry/start buttons, etc.).

Hi Emily, I can’t tell you enough how I appreciate this video. You addressed solutions to some of the struggles I face. I’m going to use your method for my new puppy. You mentioned alternative to zip tie. What was it? My previous puppy chewed off zip tie and appeared in his poop. Also where can I find the bucket for the water? I love how it’s secure from spilling. As always I enjoy your video immensely ❤️

Hi Emily! I have a pen much like yours but she tends to sleep a lot of the time in it. How do I make it so she makes more choices to play etc?

Thank you for this video! I was contemplating between a playpen made of metal/plastic or a collapsible one for my 6 month old toy poodle (2kg). May I know the dimensions of the playpen and how big should a playpen be?

  32. SEzzz53 on August 10, 2022 at 11:33 pm

So helpful! Another reason to train a dog to use a pee pad is if they ever have surgery or an illness where they aren’t able to go outside or walk distances go down porch steps.

Hi Emily! Awesome tips!! As usual!!
Question: what brand is the white folding gate/pen? Thanks!!
Yes lots to think about. When I first brought my boy home I also got him a toy with a heartbeat so he wouldn’t miss his sister and mom as much. It became his fave till he ate it’s ear off and needs repair. Now he sleeps on my head:)

  42. Sebastian R. Jepsen on August 10, 2022 at 11:45 pm

    Great video Emily!
We have definitely made mistakes introducing our pup to his playpen. He still does not love being in there even when we sit or stand right besides it – He will not nap by him self, so getting him in there and enforcing calm behavior is the only way to get him to sleep – Though he will fight it for some minutes with whining and jumping up on the sides.

Do you recommend using high or low values treats for this? I am worried that high value treats are getting him too excited.

Hello, thank you very much for the video. I was wondering if you could tell me the make of your pen? Thanks.
