What is it Really Like To Work At Petsmart Grooming / Petco Grooming

This is a an informative video on what its like to work at a corporate grooming salon such as Petsmart and Petco.

I will tell you what the pros and cons are for working as a groomer at Petco & as a groomer at Petsmart. I will give you my experience as a grooming working at Petsmart.
I will say that I did not get trained at a Petsmart / Petco, so I have expereince grooming at a private grooming salon.

There is a huge difference working at a private salon vs working at a corporate grooming salon such as Petco & Petsmart.

This video should give some insight for someone wanting to start grooming but not sure where to start / thinking about being trained at a Petsmart or Petco.

According to you how you suppose to make a puppy quiet ? Hit it ?? Or scream at it ?? A puppy or Dog don’t speak yet they have feelings just like humans! And if you want to ”grow” then hit a office.

This was soooo informative, I was going to pay for online school with a hands on experience of 150hours but my Boyfriend keeps saying go to petco and I’m sorry but I’m not trying to be locked into a contract. Free isn’t always good and I want to learn right the first time. Thank you for this one !

I’d like to get my rescue cat groomed but I’m afraid it would stress her out too much. I’ve tried using electric clippers on her and she won’t allow it. She’s very sensitive to noises. Plus I don’t know her past history. She was 4 when I rescued her. Now she’s 5. She seemed a bit wild and acted like she’d never been outside before. Now she loves being outside and she tries not to cut me anymore during play. She would probably needs at least 2 people holding her to groom. Maybe a muzzle too.

I was thinking about getting my cat groomed. I don’t want her claws clipped. She needs them for defense. But she is a long hair cat and there’s a couple clumps I can’t brush out. What does it cost to groom a cat?

This is the same girl that states she has **5** years of experience grooming when you go into get your dog groomed? LOL!!!
Please. I started getting my dogs groomed privately 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did. My service dog doesn’t have to deal with people not understanding the difference in commands and my show dog has never looked better.

I’ve been working at pet store near Central Park and I’m thinking about learning to groom but I also need to work full time. Any advice?

DO.NOT.GROOM.FOR.CORPRATE. I’ve been grooming for almost 6 years now and learned at petsmart. I can’t say how dissatisfied I am learning/relearning everything that you actually need to become a proficient groomer.

I feel like this is pretty narrow minded. I have been working for petco and was trained by petco. I had to past several breed specific tests to become a full groomer. I can do several breed cuts and I’ve never had a dog that needed to be regroomed by someone else after being groomed by me. Just the other day I walked into a high end private salon just with the intention of leaving my contact info. The manager went over my groom photos and immediately booked me an interview. So again I think your generalizing because I’ve seen some incredibly talented people trained by petco and working for petco.

I didn’t wanna go do anything crazy, just wanted to bathe, brush, trim up dogs honestly hahaha

It’s a stepping stone not a final destination. If someone is serious about making it a career they are aware they have to study further on their own. I doubt anyone stays after two years.

I have worked at Petco and Petsmart and will ALWAYS choose Petco. Petsmart uses Hydrosurges, so you aren’t required to actually scrub the dirt away. The shampoos are very cheap. Petco uses Well and Good, it’s a mostly all-natural line of shampoos. And you are required to scrub the dogs. The quality of the employees has always been higher and I have worked at both across the US. I agree with you on the deshedding. People will purchase a deshed package and I’ll use the Mud Bath conditioner most of the time since it’s a denser thicker conditioner and works much better than the deshed conditioner. I also agree about the training, both slack greatly on grooming training greatly. They are much more concerned about quantity than quality, which puts the groomers into stress mode, feeling the need to get 10+ dogs in and out a day, so the quality flys out the window. It’s a very stressful and loud environment in both stores. I taught myself how to groom off youtube and still groom better than most corporate-taught groomers, and I am always giving them tips to groom better and more efficiently.

i work at petsmart and the training now is only 3 weeks long which was extremely stressful coming back from academy. As soon as i came back from training, I was expected to do 4 dogs a day. I was barely learning the basics. extremely stressful situation. I do agree with you on a lot of things about petsmart. it’s kind of ridiculous. it’s all about numbers. also, the no tools on the table thing is stupid to me too. I feel the training is so rushed and they have such a high expectation from you. the one thing i don’t agree with is that I’ve actually seen some pretty talented groomers come from petsmart.

Such a good description of working at Corporate, I worked there for 11 years and though I love learning the safety aspects I had to learn how to groom well through expo’s and workshops. I was lucky to have really good groomers around me and managers who cared about safety.

What’s your opinion about how they treat them? I’ve been taking my dogs and the employees have been giving attitude so I’m worried they will hurt my dog. My dog has been getting express due to medical reasons. And they act like I’m just being to difficult. And ik dogs have died at petsmart. So I’m having second thoughts.

  22. Vee Rodgers on January 8, 2023 at 2:34 am

Kinda shitty that groomers would turn away those who have trained at a petsmart/petco. Makes no sense to me. If they are interested in working with a private groomers, that seems to indicate they are looking for a change, and more than likely open to changing bad habit and bettering their techniques as a groomer. Even if they may have learned to groom incorrectly, they’ll certainly be more knowledgeable and proficient in grooming/bathing than someone with zero experience in either.

    I just got a job as a bather , i have 2 beautiful doodles that i have ( 1yr and 7 weeks ) i hope my experience is amazing… any tips .-. ?

  25. Natasha on January 8, 2023 at 2:36 am

I literally got hired today as a bather/groomer trainee. I’m sad to hear the many rules, set-up, and products used can impede the quality and time-efficiency of the groom 🙁 also, to have to pay the $6000 back if you break the contract? Geeze, that makes me nervous…I can’t predict the future!

I’ve been working at mom and pop groomers for a very long time also worked at petsmart ( awful company) now I work at pet co after being in the business for almost 14 years I have never loved a job so much in my life i can only speak for my location, but I’m a 38 year old straight man and this is the most fulfilling job I have ever had I make good money and I love my pooches( clients)! again start at a mom and pop shop then go to petco and you will make really good money and also work in a great positive environment

  27. BigBird on January 8, 2023 at 2:40 am

Extraordinarily helpful. Been walking dogs for six months and looking to work more with dogs more closely. And I was considering a small business or pet smart for training. Unbelievable after you read or watch things like this. Ive worked at other corporations and it’s just crazy the amount of false advertising, lack of training, policy implementation, differences between different branches…it’s an absolute mess. Thank you so much for the video. Now I know!

Lol I understand the window and laughing and waving, politely tell the pet parents to go away , I do it if the puppers gets worked up

I wanted to ask you a question what where the typical hours for Petco/Petsmart full time? Do they offer flexible schedules?

  30. Jessica velarde on January 8, 2023 at 2:42 am

Yes I remember our dog used to start howling when he would see us so we would walk away

  31. Roslyn Davis on January 8, 2023 at 2:42 am

Thank you so much for your advice because I was looking for a grooming academy and I recently just put an application in there now that I know this I will be withdrawing

I’ve worked as a bather at other salons, but just got hired on as a bather/apprentice today at PetSmart. The other places never wanted to train me to the point where I would become an official apprentice, and just wanted to keep me behind the scenes, doing everything else.

The part where you mentioned there not really being room to grow at a PetSmart is something I think people should really know going into it. Don’t expect too much.

I’m using it for resume experience, and nothing more. I’ve groomed my own dogs for years, but have nothing official to put down on a resume, since they won’t accept "I’ve groomed my own dogs", as experience.

So my plan is to go in, abide by their rules while I’m there, do what I have to do, learn about breed specific cuts, etc… then when my contract is up, move on. It’s income, and it’s experience.

  34. Elizabeth Layne on January 8, 2023 at 2:43 am

The Petsmart I worked at was horrible. I worked there for two months as a bather and saw and heard things that disgusted me. Workers giving the dogs the middle finger, yelling at the dogs and telling the dogs they hate them, tugging and pulling on the dogs way too hard. Constant bitching and complaining how much they hated being there. Every worker was miserable and it was the most negative toxic work environment I ever worked in. I will never recommend that place to anyone. It’s a shame that so many people take their dogs there. I reported the place and I hope something changes. I couldn’t watch that shit happen anymore I would’ve snapped and hurt somebody because I love animals so much and what was happening there was SO wrong.

  35. Alyssa Anne on January 8, 2023 at 2:44 am

How long while working for petco/petsmart before they send you to academy? I’ve been bathing for two years and no one will teach me how to groom

I’m so glad I found this video

  37. mikayla turner on January 8, 2023 at 2:48 am

I agree with EVERYTHING in this video and i’ve said literally all of these things. the only thing you got wrong was the length of petsmarts “academy”, it’s only 4 weeks and 1 week is online so only 3 hands on.

  38. Maddie J on January 8, 2023 at 2:52 am

I’ve worked at a few different petsmarts in my 6 years of grooming. I feel like the products are good- they get the dog clean and they do smell a lot better. I feel like no matter what soap you use, the washing technique is all that matters. The Furminator Treatment to me is almost a scam. The blowdrying, the way you brush is what gets that not matted undercoat out- any deep conditioner as well.
I learned to groom at a Petsmart (basically the basics) and spent 2 years in a private salon. When I came back to petsmart I was shocked of the lack of quality and choppy cuts. They were OKAY with it!!! WHATTT and yes they make the most stupid, nonprofessional grooming rules that hinder speed and quality -So frustrating!! The rules are made by people who clearly not groomers lol!! They just care about the numbers.
