Why You Do NOT Pet Service Dogs

Why You Do NOT Pet Service Dogs

Service dogs have a job that they have to do. My service dog for example is a guide dog, meaning that his job is to guide me because I am blind and cant see. What ever their job may be it is important not to pet them in order for them to stay focused and so they dont get distracted. A lot of people do not understand the reasoning behind why you do not pet service animals so I figured I would make this video to explain why it is so important not to pet or distract a working dog like Diesel my guide dog. If you have any questions please feel free to ask down in the comments.

It’s hard to believe that people still don’t know this. I’ve seen some dummies act so goofy towards service dogs, it’s embarrassing.

That skit though… where’s your Oscar?

I can imagine how frustrating this can be. I remember you showing footage of when they were teaching you this in New York. I don’t blame you for making up a fake name at all, that’s actually a good idea. On a more humorous note, have you ever accidentally put the harness on Cooper instead of Diesel? Haha.

This happens to me daily: “ I am SUCH a dog lover, I just HAVE to pet!”, “ What’s the dog’s name?” Me: “uhhh. It’s O’Hara” them :“ O’Hara look over here! Hi O’Hara, O’Hara!” One time I actually had somebody call her over to their desk while I was working in college and when she got up I turned to look at the person and they said “I’m sorry she’s just so cute”. I also have a bright neon sign that shows not to pet, make eye contact with, or talk to my dog. In addition I have two leash wraps that say DO NOT PET, and SERVICE DOG. People always say “I didn’t see the sign” ummm. I could go on, and on haha. I do understand that dogs are adorable and petting them brings happiness… please remember that our dogs are doing life-saving tasks and if they are distracted it can be very dangerous to the teams lives. If we say that it’s not a good time to pet our dog and that we are sorry, please do not get upset. O’Hara is my eyes.

I don’t know how hard it is to be blind or have to have a service dog at all time but if I was like this I probably would have done the same thing you did because this is why accidents happen. Anyway very loyal dog glad to see him doing his job very well without chasing squirrels or the mailman. It shows how well he’s been trained. Very good dog and this video is very helpful to those who never dealt with something like this before.Hope things get better for you I can imagine being blind is no fun

  13. Lance File on May 29, 2022 at 1:24 am

How long have you been blind

  14. Amanda Thomas on May 29, 2022 at 1:24 am

You know its simple logic! If you’re working and someone talks to you, you’d be distracted and not able to do your job effectively!!! Same with service animals! I’ve learned that if the harness is on you don’t touch them or talk to them. Because that means they’re working! But you could ask the owner in other words ask don’t just randomly go up and touch the dog!

These dogs are not pets, when are people going to understand this. It’s the same as if you have a care provider pushing you in a wheel chair. You wouldn’t want them to stop and talk with the person if you are trying to get some where. Leave people’s service animals alone!!! I have a service dog because of PTSD and have the same problem. Since I don’t show my disability they say he’s not a service dog. So Justin I understand why you did this video. I’m sharing it so hopefully people will understand

Maybe change the sign to "Beware, He bites", lol.

  18. TJ mini moto on May 29, 2022 at 1:28 am

He is not really blind he is faking it

  19. pmikeymike on May 29, 2022 at 1:31 am

Thanks for sharing bro. I’ve worked around service animals and it’s hard to resist petting them because they are so well behaved, but it is so dangerous to the person they are supporting. He’s an awesome dog and you’re Da Man!!

  20. Credinity on May 29, 2022 at 1:33 am

    That’s a awesome dog!

  21. Ace Smith on May 29, 2022 at 1:38 am

I have a service dog for my ASD level 2 (Autism Spectrum Disorder), ADHD, severe anxiety, anger issues, and some health issues. But it is so annoying when kids at my school just pet him. Due to my anger issues I usually snap at them then I GET DETENTION FOR YELLING AND BEING "RUDE" AND AS OTHER STUDENTS SAY I’M BEING "SELFISH"!!! Also my school’s administrative staff is made of idiots who let the other students pet my dog and they just tossed me into a regular class with no help what so ever with my AUTISM which for me makes learning 10 times harder so I have to rely on my friends and their parents to support me because my family is never around we don’t even live in the same country (Long story). I have plenty of stories that I’m sure you don’t want to here so I won’t bore you with them. But anyway I look forward to watching more of your content!
